I was concerned about Gaby's health and wasn't sure if it was best to stay on Bozcaada island or continue on but she insisted on continuing and wanted to find a better place where we could rest and see new things.After a ferry ride and 3 buses (and 8 hours of traveling) we arrived in Selçuk and found a fantastic hotel where we thought we would stay 2 or 3 days and ended up staying 6. It was a wonderful base for our explorations for the next week.
After resting and cooling down with the AC to its maximum, enjoying the rooftop lounge and swimming in the hotel swimming pool we were ready to start sightseeing.
The ruins of Ephesus are the best preserved classical city in the eastern Mediterranean and really give you a feel for what life was like in Roman times. Ephesus was the center for worship of Cybele, the Anatolian goddess of fertility (Artemis for the Ionians and Diana for the Romans). Our hotel got us a ride to the ruins and we spent 3 hours walking around and looking. Unfortunately we arrived at the same time as a fleet of tour buses and were swallowed up by a raging river of humanity wearing safari pants and Hawaiian shirts. We especially enjoyed the enormous coliseum which was very well preserved and the facade of the library. From Ephesus we had an enjoyable 3 kilometer walk back to our hotel.
Selçuk ended up being so great because we stayed in a great hotel run by very nice people. We also go to use it as a base to see a lot of the amazing sights in the vicinity.
