We were ready for a break.
During the last 6 fantastic months we had traveled through parts of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa and had been living the whole time out of our backpacks. We knew that 6 months was about the maximum that we could travel continuously and had always planned on flying from Spain to Argentina where we could recuperate from the trip and enjoy the summer with Gaby’s family.
Salvador saw us off in downtown Barcelona as we boarded an airport bus to get to Barcelona International Airport. We took a short flight from Barcelona to Madrid.
In Madrid we had a few hours free before our flight to Buenos Aires left but unfortunately Gaby had misplaced all of her credit cards at Barcelona’s airport so we had to call our credit card companies and cancel everything. When we had finally straightened everything out we still had enough time to take the subway downtown and briefly visit Madrid. The downtown was cold but busy and beautiful as always.
Our Air Europa flight lasted about 12 hours and was relatively quick and painless. One of Gaby’s friends who lives in Buenos Aires was out of town on vacation and offered to let us stay in her apartment after we arrived. After almost two months of cold weather in Morocco and Europe we stepped outside of the airport in Buenos Aires and almost melted. The temperature was in the high 90’s with high humidity.
For almost a week Gaby and I slept a lot, explored the city, visited old haunts, did errands, worked on our blog and just generally enjoyed Buenos Aires
It was the same Buenos Aires that we knew so well, but it was also different: First of all it was brutally hot and humid, secondly the city was eerily quiet as many Porteños were out of town on vacation to escape the city’s heat and thirdly it has become very unsafe there since we left and Gaby had to constantly remind me to take care of my belongings after being so long in the very safe Middle East.
We enjoyed Buenos Aires and it was a nice to see how it had grown and changed since we lived there. After a week there Gaby’s parents arrived to pick us up and we headed south towards Coronel Suárez.
